          Pequena vila balneária, antiga aldeia dos Borarí. Colonizada pelos portugueses e elevada a categoria de vila em 06 de março de 1758. Com população aproximada de 5000 habitantes que tem sua economia exclusivamente baseada no turismo. Paraíso encantado de rara beleza, visitado e reconhecido por turistas do mundo inteiro como o mais fascinante roteiro turístico do interior da Amazônia. As águas límpidas e quentes do Lago Verde originaram o apelido carinhoso de "O Caribe de água doce". Ele é circundado por extensas praias de areia fina e branca, que ficaram famosas até fora do Brasil. A beleza de Alter do Chão é um exemplo de preservação ambiental. Localizada em uma enseada do Rio Tapajós, distante 32 km do aeroporto e 35 km do centro de Santarém, está estrategicamente situado no centro de uma região rica em fauna e flora, ecossistemas variados: lagos, igapós, várzea, terra firme, floresta, savanas, além de uma infinidade de praias habitadas e desertas com exuberantes coroas de areia onde se destacam Alter do Chão, Cururu, Ponta Grande no Arapiuns e Maguari. A partir de Alter do Chão é possível a prática de pescaria e piracaia, escalada, caminhada em trilhas ecológicas, passeios de lancha e barco, visita a comunidades tradicionais e às cidades vizinhas.

Nos meses de Março à Maio, é considerada época das chuvas, que não são tão freqüentes, a região possui um clima quente e úmido de floresta com temperatura média de 27ºC. A apenas 03 horas de barco à motor a partir de Alter do Chão é uma excelente opção para eco turistas que querem desfrutar da rica flora amazônica, com caminhadas na floresta, onde são encontradas espécies com mais de 100 anos de idade e com altitude acima de 70 metros típicas de uma Floresta Tropical. As comunidades a serem visitadas são Maguarí e Jamaraquá, tradicionais pelo modo de vida do caboclo ribeirinho, que sobrevive da natureza sem degradá-la. Em Maguari além das trilhas na mata podemos ainda, (no verão) contemplar uma das mais belas praias da região, dormir sob o céu estrelado e apreciar o artesanato local – bolsas e até roupas feitas a base de látex (leite extraído da seringueira) conhecido como couro vegetal. Localizado à margem esquerda do rio Tapajós, tem acesso exclusivo por via fluvial, duas horas e meia em barco de Alter do Chão até sua foz. No verão surgem inúmeras praias como a Ponta Grande e a Ponta do Icuxí, bancos de areia branquíssima ótimas para banhos e pernoite com direito a uma piracaia.  A Cachoeira do Aruã situada rio adentro é um espetáculo a parte. Dentre as comunidades ribeirinhas que podemos visitar estão a Coroca e o Urucureá, que se destacam pelo seu povo hospitaleiro e seu artesanato a base de palha de tucumã (bolsas, porta copos e pratos) Located on the left bank of the Tapajós River, has exclusive access by boat, two and half hours by boat from Alter do Chao to its mouth.
