          Pequena vila balneária, antiga aldeia dos Borarí. Colonizada pelos portugueses e elevada a categoria de vila em 06 de março de 1758. Com população aproximada de 5000 habitantes que tem sua economia exclusivamente baseada no turismo. Paraíso encantado de rara beleza, visitado e reconhecido por turistas do mundo inteiro como o mais fascinante roteiro turístico do interior da Amazônia. As águas límpidas e quentes do Lago Verde originaram o apelido carinhoso de "O Caribe de água doce". Ele é circundado por extensas praias de areia fina e branca, que ficaram famosas até fora do Brasil. A beleza de Alter do Chão é um exemplo de preservação ambiental. Localizada em uma enseada do Rio Tapajós, distante 32 km do aeroporto e 35 km do centro de Santarém, está estrategicamente situado no centro de uma região rica em fauna e flora, ecossistemas variados: lagos, igapós, várzea, terra firme, floresta, savanas, além de uma infinidade de praias habitadas e desertas com exuberantes coroas de areia onde se destacam Alter do Chão, Cururu, Ponta Grande no Arapiuns e Maguari. A partir de Alter do Chão é possível a prática de pescaria e piracaia, escalada, caminhada em trilhas ecológicas, passeios de lancha e barco, visita a comunidades tradicionais e às cidades vizinhas.
